The Swiss Stock Market Climbed Friday, With Strength In Novartis

The Swiss stock market finished Friday's trading session in positive territory. The strong performance of the index heavyweights, especially shares of Novartis, provided a boost to the overall market. The expiration date on the Eurex derivatives exchange also played a role.

The Swiss Market Index increased by 0.25 percent Friday and finished at 7,500.57. The SMI ended the trading week with an overall gain of 1.41 percent. The Swiss Leader Index climbed by 0.04 percent and the Swiss Performance Index added 0.24 percent.

Novartis was the top performer among the defensive heavyweights on Friday, with a gain of 1.1 percent. Shares of Nestle posted a gain of 0.3 percent, following Thursday's sharp decline of 2.3 percent. Roche also ended the day with a gain of 0.3 percent.

Sulzer climbed by 0.7 percent Friday. The industrial group reported a significant increase in 2012 sales and profits. The Company's outlook was of cautious confidence and the dividend was increased.

Banks turned in a weak performance on Friday. UBS finished with a loss of 1.6 percent, while Credit Suisse fell by 0.9 percent.
