Stepan Co. (SCL), a producer of specialty and intermediate chemicals, Tuesday said net income attributable to the company for the fourth quarter climbed 17 percent to $15.44 million from $13.18 million. Earnings per share increased to $0.68 from $0.59.
Earnings per share excluding deferred compensation was $0.79, while it totaled $0.68 last year. Two analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $0.71 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Net sales declined 4 percent to $427.26 million from $444.17 million in the prior year. Analysts expected revenues of $408.60 million.
