A powerful winter storm system, dubbed Q by meteorologists, is moving its way across the central United States, and is expected to reach as far east as the Ohio River Valley, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm system pummeled Kansas and Nebraska Thursday (February 21), and with more than a dozen other states in its range, it is showing no signs of letting up just yet.
Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has already declared a state of emergency, while Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Sly James has done the same. The city's airport began announcing cancellations and several other major institutions closed their doors.
"We're encouraging people, if they don't have to travel, don't travel," Mark Meints, emergency management director for Gage County, Nebraska, said at a press conference Tuesday, according to the Beatrice Daily Sun.
While the northern areas of the Midwest are hit with snow, torrential downpours are expected in the southern areas of the same region, in particular the Gulf Coast.
