An investigation has been in launched into the whereabouts of a California couple who have been missing for over a month after disappearing on a bicycle trip in Peru. Oakland couple Jamie Neal, 27, and Garrett Hand, 25, started a cycling tour of Argentina, Chile and Peru in November and were last seen in Lima on January 26.

The couple had kept in close contact with friends and family members in the US throughout the trip and were active on Facebook until a few weeks ago. Speaking with NBC News, Hand's mother Francine Fitzgerald says she is very concerned about their wellbeing:

"We are trying to figure out how he would be on buses, staying in hostels, being on boats, without any money," she said.

Their disappearance comes shortly after the US Embassy in Peru issued a stern warning to all Americans about a credible kidnapping threat from an unnamed criminal organization operating in the area.
