The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reminding citizens that March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. They are helping raise awareness for the cause this month with their new "Screen for Life" campaign, with PSAs featuring Meryl Streep.
"Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Every year, about 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die from it," the CDC reports on their official site.
The site also details colorectal cancer symptoms including blood in stool, sudden weight loss and abdominal pain. They also recommend screen measures including colonoscopy (every 10 years), high-sensitivity fecal occult blood test (FOBT), stool test, or fecal immunochemical test (FIT) (every year) and sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years).
