Jimmy Fallon may be replacing Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show" next year.
The former "SNL" star (whose show airs at 12:35, immediately following Leno's show) may be taking Leno's place on the long-running show once Leno retires, which may be announced this May according to sources. NBC have not yet confirmed Leno's retirement date nor commented on the possibility of Fallon taking Leno's spot, noting: "We do not speculate on a rumor."
A source near the network explained that Fallon was being considered for the spot in order to place him in direct competition with ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, whose show was moved to the 11:35 slot in January, explaining: "The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the young audience goes that way, the harder it is for Jimmy [Fallon] to keep that audience."
