A winter storm is to blame for several accidents leading to the closure of Interstate 70 near Vail, Colorado on Monday, officials say.

Two giant pileups involving more than 50 vehicles occurred Monday afternoon. No serious injuries or fatalities have yet been reported, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

However, part of the interstate was shut down both eastbound and westbound. The Colorado Department of Transportation has not specified when it will reopen, according to the Denver Post.

A winter storm warning has been in effect for an area that was only expected to get one to three inches of new snow Monday afternoon. The combination of snow accumulations from prior days, up to a foot in some areas, and around 20 MPH winds have created dangerous driving conditions, the Denver Post reported.

Blowing snow and poor visibility were reported in the area, according to the department.

Denver Airport also tweeted about the poor driving conditions: "Please slow down and drive with care."
