With one third of the Kenyan presidential election results coming out on Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta is leading over his main rival, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, by 13 percent votes, media reports said.
Reports based on counting from 34.4 percent of Kenya's 33,000 polling stations said Kenyatta of the Jubilee alliance has secured 54 percent votes, which tallies to 2.19 million, while Odinga, leader of the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD), has won 41 percent, or 1.65 million votes.
Odinga's camp has already raised allegations of foul play with its campaign head Franklin Bett quoted as saying that "the outcome of these elections will be in serious doubt."
None of the six others who are also in the race to the presidency were able to make their presence felt significantly in an election that is seen as crucial for the east African nation's future.
The head of the Election Commission said the results were provisional. The Commission will have seven days to announce the results.
The United States and other Western countries are eager on the outcome of the poll results in a nation seen as a vital ally in the regional battle against militant Islam. They have warned of possible "consequences" in case of a victory for Kenyatta.
The son of the country's first President Jomo Kenyatta, Uhuru is facing trial at at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in April on charges of organizing ethnic violence in the 2007 disputed election that left more than 1,200 people dead.
As many as 19 people, including policemen, were killed in pre-poll violence on Sunday night, but BBC reported that the situation is calm on Tuesday morning.
A candidate needs to win more than 50 percent of the votes, as well as at least 25 per cent votes in half of 47 counties, to be declared a clear winner, failing which the presidential election will spill over to a run-off between the two leading candidates, which is scheduled for next month.
