Escort Says Menendez Claims Were Made Up

Escort Says Menendez Claims Were Made Up
3/5/2013 11:02 AM ET

One of two escorts who made a video statement claiming the New Jersey Democratic Senator Robert Menendez paid for sex is now backtracking her statement, saying that she was paid to make the claims.

The Washington Post reports that one of the two escorts involved in the allegations against the senator told Dominican authorities that she was approached by a lawyer and was offered money to state the false claims. The escort says she has never even met the senator.

Menendez has continued to state his innocence, feels that the allegations are being encouraged by "right-wing blogs."

"It's amazing to me that anonymous, nameless, faceless, individuals on a website can drive that type of story into the mainstream, but that's what they have done successfully," Menendez said. "Now, nobody can find them, no one ever met them, no one ever talked to them, but that's where we are at. So, the bottom line is all of those smears are absolutely false, and that's the bottom line."
