The girlfriend of Trayvon Martin has been caught lying under oath, and is causing complications in the murder case of George Zimmerman.
MyFoxOrlando.com reports defense attorney Mark O'Mara was pursuing medical records for Martin's girlfriend, known as Witness 8 in court proceedings, because she claimed in a sworn statement that she was unable to attend Martin's funeral because she was in the hospital. It was revealed that those medical records did not exist.
"She, in fact, did not go to the hospital as she stated under oath," said defense attorney Don West. "And that [prosecutor] Mr. [John] Guy represented there would not be hospital records confirming her sworn statement, because, in fact, she lied."
The girlfriend is a key witness in the trial because she was allegedly on the phone with Martin before he was killed by Zimmerman.
Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch leader, claims that he shot Martin, 17, in self-defense after they got into a fight in February 2012 and was trying to maintain that he was following the "stand-your-ground law", which states that a person may justifiably use force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of an unlawful threat, without an obligation to retreat first.
