Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords returned to the site of the 2011 shooting where she was critically injured and six people were killed. Giffords appeared along with her husband Mark Kelly and Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, according to NBC News.
It is Giffords' first public appearance at the Safeway grocery store where Jared Loughner opened fire on the crowd on January 8, 2011. The event drew in about 100 attendees including media members, Giffords' staff and well-wishers, NBC reports.
Giffords, who was left with impaired speech, a pronounced limp and partial paralysis of her right arm, urged lawmakers to push for more stringent background checks for gun purchases:
"Be bold. Be courageous. Please support background checks. Thank you very much," said Giffords in her brief speech.
