Sweden's Princess Lilian has died at the age of 97, the Swedish royal family has confirmed. She was born Lillian May Davies in Swansea, Wales and was a celebrated beauty in her youth, appearing in Vogue and other fashion magazines.

She first met her husband, Prince Bertil in 1943 at a cocktail party for her 28th birthday. At the time Lilian was working making radios to support the war effort. The pair quickly fell in love but were not married for 30 years due to Sweden's strict marriage policy for those in possible succession to the crown.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt released an official statement on her passing, noting:

"It is with sorrow that I have learnt that H.R.H. (Her Royal Highness) Princess Lilian is dead. A much loved and appreciated member of the royal family has now passed away."
