Inflation in Hungary eased for a fifth straight month in February, the latest figures from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office showed Tuesday.
The annual consumer price inflation eased to 2.8 percent in February from 3.7 percent in January compared to expectations for a slowdown to 3.1 percent. A lower annual inflation was last observed about seven years ago, the statistical office said.
The decline in the inflation rate was mainly led by a 10 percent price reduction for electricity, natural gas and purchased heat, the statistical agency noted.
During the month, food prices grew 4.1 percent compared to last year. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco were 14.8 percent more expensive than a year earlier.
Local transport costs rose 5.5 percent. But clothing and footwear were 0.4 percent cheaper on a year-on-year basis.
On a monthly basis, the consumer price index fell 0.1 percent against expectations for a 0.2 percent increase.
