Aeropostale Inc. (ARO) Thursday reported that its fourth-quarter net loss was $671 thousand or $0.01 per share, compared to net income of $26.1 million or $0.32 per share in the comparable quarter last year.

Adjusted net income for the latest fourth quarter was $19.1 million or $0.24 per share, down from $35.6 million or $0.44 per share in the prior year quarter. On average, 22 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.22 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

Net sales for the quarter decreased 1% to $797.71 million from $808.38 million in the year ago period, while twenty analysts had consensus revenue estimate of $775.70 million for the quarter.

Fourth quarter comparable sales, including the e-commerce channel, decreased 8% compared to a 7% decrease last year, while fourth quarter comparable store sales, excluding the e-commerce channel, decreased 9%, compared to a decrease of 9% in the prior year period.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2013, the company expects to report a loss in the range of $0.15 to $0.20 per share, compared to earnings of $0.13 per diluted share last year. Analysts expect the company to report earnings of $0.08 per share for the first-quarter.
