Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc., a division of Toyota Motor Corp. (TM), Tuesday said its US vehicle sales in March grew 1 percent, driven mainly by strong sales growth at Lexus division.
Toyota's car sales slowed due to lower demand from consumers for Toyota Prius hybrids and Camry compact, but partly offset by strong demand for Corolla and Avalon.
Toyota said its US March sales grew to 205,342 units from 203,282 units in the same month last year. The month had 27 selling days against 28 days last year. March sales increased 4.8 percent on a daily selling rate basis.
At its namesake Toyota division, sales edged down 0.5 percent to 182,152 units from 183,142 units, while sales at Lexus segment climbed 15.1 percent to 23,190 units from 20,140 units last year.
Car sales at Toyota division dropped 5.4 percent to 107,033 units, as Prius sales plunged 22.9 percent and Camry slipped 11.5 percent. Meanwhile, the sales decline was partially checked by better sales performance of Corolla and Avalon, which grew 11.1 percent and 109.9 percent, respectively.
Lexus car division sales rose 13.1 percent to 12,982 units, as LS and ES sedans grew 71.0 percent and 116.4 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, truck sales at Toyota division rose 7.3 percent to 75,119 units, with the help of strong sales of pickup trucks Tacoma and Tundra, and crossover SUVs Venza, 4Runner and Sienna.
Lexus truck sales grew 17.8 percent to 10,208 units, driven mainly by the strong sales of crossover SUV Lexus RX.
TM is currently trading at $99.96, down $1.26 or 1.24%, on a volume of 0.3 million shares, on the NYSE.
