NVGN Sizzles, VRX Sweetens Bid, PRAN, CBMG On Track, DARA Does A Deal

Cellular Biomedicine Group Inc. (CBMG) announced Wednesday that its phase I trial of haMPC (Human Adipose-derived Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells) therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis is in progress. The trial is being conducted by Shanghai's Renji Hospital, which is a tertiary level Class A hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

CBMG closed Wednesday's trading at $5.30, up 6%.

DARA BioSciences Inc. (DARA) has signed an agreement with Prime Therapeutics Specialty Pharmacy LLC for distribution of its two lead proprietary products, Gelclair for patients with oral mucositis and Soltamox to treat breast cancer patients.

While Soltamox was launched at the end of 2012, Gelclair is expected to be introduced into the market in April 2013.

DARA has sought orphan drug status for its cancer-support therapeutic compound, KRN5500, for the treatment of chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CCIPN) in patients with cancer, and is awaiting FDA decision. KRN5500 has completed a phase 2a clinical trial.

Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ISIS) has initiated a phase I study of ISIS-APOA Rx to treat atherosclerosis.

ISIS-APOARx is an antisense drug targeting apolipoprotein that contributes to the formation of plaque in arteries through its attachment to an LDL-C particle in a complex termed lipoprotein, or Lp(a). High levels of Lp(a) are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke.

ISIS closed Wednesday's trading at $16.29, down 2.86%.

Navidea Biopharmaceuticals Inc. (NAVB) announced Wednesday that the first subject in an investigator-initiated study to evaluate NAV5001 in Dementia with Lewy Bodies has been enrolled.

This study will be followed by a company-sponsored phase 2b study of NAV5001 in DLB as well as pivotal parallel Phase 3 registration studies of NAV5001 as an aid in the differential diagnosis of Parkinsonian syndromes in 2013, noted the company.

NAVB closed Wednesday's trading 0.79% higher at $2.55.

Shares of Novogen Ltd. (NVGN) rose as much as 60% in intraday trading on Wednesday after the company announced that the potency of its experimental drug CS-6 against cancer stem cells has been confirmed in a follow-up study.

Novogen came into limelight on February 19 with its share price surging 263% after reporting that CS-6 is highly active against ovarian cancer stem cells in laboratory studies.

Cancer stem cells have been identified in a range of cancers including gut, skin, ovarian and brain cancers and leukaemia. Being almost completely resistant to radiotherapy and standard anti-cancer drugs, the cancer stem cells are thought to be the cause of cancer relapse.

NVGN closed Wednesday's trading at $6.05, up 40.21%.

Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ORMP) has been granted Japanese patent for its core technology in oral delivery of proteins. The patent has also been approved in Israel and Australia. The company's portfolio now consists of seven issued patents and 28 patents pending.

ORMP closed Wednesday's trading 1.04% higher at $8.65.

Prana Biotechnology's (PRAN) phase II trials of its lead compound PBT2 for Huntington disease and Alzheimer's disease are on track.

The Alzheimer's trial, dubbed IMAGINE, is scheduled to be completed in December 2013. The results of the Huntington disease trial, known as Reach2HD trial are expected to be reported in October 2013.

PRAN closed Wednesday's trading at $2.20, up 0.92%.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. (VRX) (VRX.TO) has now sweetened its offer price for Obagi Medical Products Inc. (OMPI) to $24.00 per share in cash from its earlier bid of $19.75 per share. The increased offer price has been unanimously approved by Obagi's board of directors and the revised offer expires 12:00 midnight on April 23, 2013.

VRX shed 4.64% and closed Wednesday's trading at $71.87.
