State-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., (BHEL) on Thursday said that it had tied up with Japan-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which would enable the former to receive environment-friendly technology for its manufacturing units.

BHEL has geared up for the manufacture and supply of pollution control equipment to meet the emerging requirement of thermal power plants, the company said.

The equipment called Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) system, which removes Sulphur DiOxide (SO2) from the flue gas. Sulphur DiOxide (SO2) is generated while firing fuels like coal and oil, the company said.

To this effect, the company has entered into a License Agreement with Japan-based Mitsubishi, a leading supplier of FGD Systems, for acquiring FGD system technology, finding application in fossil fuel power plants, it said.

The new technology based systems will be engineered and manufactured at the company's Ranipet unit in Tamil Nadu, it said.

It is expected that some of the upcoming power projects, including Ultra Mega Power Projects, may utilize this new technology.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industry is actively engaged in engineering, manufacture and sale of power system equipment, ships, industrial machinery, space systems and environmental improvement equipment.

At the BSE, Bharat Heavy Electricals shares are currently trading at Rs.178.90, down 2.16 percent from the previous close.
