Taiwan Inflation Eases More Than Expected

Inflation in Taiwan eased more than expected in March, the latest figures from the Director-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics showed Monday.

The annual rate of change in the consumer price index was 1.39 percent in March, down from 2.96 percent in February. Economists expected the rate of inflation to slow to 1.83 percent.

Vegetable prices plunged 16.38 percent annually last month, while fruit prices rose 6.72 percent. Utility costs moved up 2.63 percent.

On a monthly basis, CPI fell 1.41 percent. The core CPI, that excludes fruits, vegetables and energy, was up 1.22 percent year-on-year, but declined 1.11 percent on a monthly basis.

The wholesale price index, meanwhile, declined 3.01 percent year-on-year in March compared to forecast for a 2.44 percent fall.
