AEZS, BLRX Move Up, ASTX, PFE Hit New Highs, ACT Buys Peace, MEIP To Watch Out

Shares of Aeterna Zentaris Inc. (AEZS) (AEZ.TO) were up over 25% in extended trading on Wednesday after the company announced encouraging updated data for Disorazol Z cytotoxic conjugates, such as AEZS-125 and AEZS-138, in human ovarian and endometrial cancer xenograft models. By definition, animals with transplanted human tumors or other tissues are called xenograft models.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ARIA) announced new preclinical data on AP26113, showing that the investigational compound inhibits clinically relevant mutants of anaplastic lymphoma kinase, or ALK, and c-ros oncogene 1ROS1. ALK mutants and oncogenic ROS1 fusions have been recently identified in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Astex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ASTX) on Wednesday presented preclinical data on SGI-110 that supports the potential of the compound in the treatment of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. A phase II study of SGI-110 in combination with Carboplatin in platinum-resistant ovarian cancer patients is underway.

ASTX touched a new 52-week high of $6.21 before closing Wednesday's trading at $6.18.

Actavis Inc. (ACT) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc.'s (VRX) (VRX) subsidiary Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., have resolved their outstanding patent litigation related to Actavis' launch of generic versions of two Medicis' products - Ziana and Zyclara.

Ziana is a topical treatment of acne vulgaris while Zyclara is a prescription medicine to treat actinic keratoses on the face or balding scalp and external genital warts.

Under the terms of the agreement, Actavis may launch its generic Ziana in July 2016, or earlier and generic Zyclara on Jan. 1, 2019, or earlier.

BioLineRx Ltd. (BLRX) has received the go-ahead from FDA to commence a phase IIa trial for BL-8040, for the treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The study is expected to be conducted in the U.S. and Israel, and will enroll up to 50 patients.

The company expects to report partial results of the trial in Q4 2013, and final results in the second half of 2014.

BLRX closed Wednesday's trading 5.08% higher at $1.86.

ImmunoGen Inc. (IMGN) is on track to submit the IND for IMGN289 in mid-2013. In preclinical studies, IMGN289 has been found to be highly active against EGFR-over expressing cancer cells, including those not dependent on EGFR signaling and those resistant to tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

IMGN closed Wednesday's trading at $17.01, up 5.52%.

Shares of Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. (INO) rose more than 5% on Wednesday after the company announced that it has been selected to receive a $3.5 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to advance the development of its next generation DNA vaccine delivery device.

New pre-clinical data presented by MEI Pharma Inc. (MEIP) shows that its mitochondrial inhibitor drug candidate, ME-344 has the ability to decrease tumor burden and delay recurrence in a pre-clinical in vivo model of recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer, the most lethal of all gynecologic malignancies. Data from an ongoing phase I clinical trial of intravenous ME-344 in patients with solid refractory tumors is expected in June 2013.

MEIP closed Wednesday's trading at $8.23, up 2.24%.

Pfizer Inc.'s (PFE) investigational compound Palbociclib has been bestowed Breakthrough Therapy designation by FDA for the potential treatment of patients with breast cancer.

Breakthrough therapy designation is intended to expedite the development and review of drugs for serious or life-threatening conditions.

Pfizer has initiated a phase III study evaluating Palbociclib in combination with letrozole versus letrozole alone as a first-line treatment for post-menopausal patients with ER+, HER2- locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. The study is currently open and enrolling patients.

PFE touched a new 52-week high of $30 before closing Wednesday's trading at $29.92.

Repros Therapeutics Inc. (RPRX) has been issued two additional U.S. patents for its late-stage candidate Androxal, which will expire in 2028 and 2031. Both the patents cover the significant co-morbidity associated with low T and Type 2 diabetes.

RPRX closed Wednesday's trading 5.33% higher at $17.19.
