Fraport AG (FPRUF.PK,0O1R.L,FRA.DE), the owner and operator of Germany's Frankfurt Airport or FRA, Thursday reported a modest rise in passengers for the month of March and the first quarter.
According to the company, traffic results at the Frankfurt Airport home base were hurt by the capacity consolidation of some airlines as well as weather and strike-related cancellations.
The firm said 6.73 million passengers used its five majority-owned airports of Frankfurt, Antalya, Burgas, Varna and Lima in March, up 3.2 percent from the same month of last year.
About 4.5 million passengers used FRA during the month, down 1.1 percent year-on-year. Without the flight disruptions registered in March 2013, FRA would have concluded the winter season with growth in passenger figures, the company noted.
FRA's aircraft movements declined 7.9 percent to 37,228 takeoffs and landings, primarily due to the 1,400 weather and strike-related flight cancellations in the month. Cargo advanced 4.4 percent.
Antalya reported a 12.5 percent rise in passengers at 1.03 million and Lima passengers climbed more than 13 percent to 1.21 million passengers.
About 20,500 passengers used Varna airport, up 38 percent from the prior year. Varna was closed from 15.10.2011 to 28.02.12 and at that time Burgas handled all VAR flights. In March 2013, Burgas reported a decline of more than 25 percent at 13,480 passengers.
The firm's five majority-owned airports welcomed 17.8 million passengers in the first quarter, up 1.6 percent from last year.
The group handled 555,737 metric tons of cargo, an year over year increase of 1.7 percent. Aircraft movements decreased by 2.2 percent in the quarter to 162,058 takeoffs and landings.
About 11.9 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport in the quarter, down 2 percent from last year. Cargo edged up 0.9 percent while movements dropped 5.8 percent.
The stock added 2.41 percent on Wednesday to close at 44.39 euros.
