Norway's merchandise trade surplus increased notably in March, helped by an increase in shipments and a decline in imports, Statistics Norway said Monday.

The trade surplus increased 14.8 percent month-on-month to NOK37.72 billion in March. Year-on-year, meanwhile, the surplus contracted by 20.2 percent.

Export of goods increased 3.9 percent sequentially to NOK75.85 billion. On a annual basis, the value of shipments decreased by 16.3 percent.

Imports, meanwhile, declined 5 percent month-on-month to NOK38.14 billion during the month. Compared to March 2012, external purchases dropped by 11.9 percent.

During the three months ended March, exports and imports decreased by 13.3 percent and 1 percent respectively from the same period a year earlier, data showed.
