Amended story heading and the first paragraph

Taiwan's export orders declined unexpectedly in March largely due a sharp fall in demand for electrical appliances, data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs revealed Monday.

Export orders were down 6.6 percent in March from the same period of last year, confounding expectations for a 1.8 percent rise.

However, export orders surged 23.4 percent on a monthly basis in March.

Orders for plastic and rubber articles slipped 12.2 percent annually, and that for chemical products declined 14.9 percent. Demand for household electrical appliances plunged 18.4 percent.
