Banco Santander's Alfredo Sáenz Resigns, Promotes Javier Marín Romano To New CEO

Spanish banking products provider Banco Santander, S.A. (SAN,BNC.L) Monday said it has agreed to appoint Javier Marín Romano as chief executive officer, after Alfredo Sáenz Abad informed of his voluntary resignation as vice chairman and chief executive officer. Abad is also leaving the board.

Marín is currently senior executive vice president of the bank and head of the global insurance, asset management and private banking division. He joined the Group in 1991.

Sáenz Abad was with Grupo Santander since 1994, when it acquired Banesto through an auction. He was executive chairman of the unit until 2002, when he was named vice chairman and chief executive of Banco Santander.

Banco Santander also agreed to appoint Matías Rodríguez Inciarte as second vice chairman. Rodríguez Inciarte is head of risk management of the Group and chairman of the board's Risk Committee.

Further, the board agreed to accept the resignation of Manuel Soto as a member of the board of directors, and to name Juan Miguel Villar Mir as an independent director.

Guillermo de la Dehesa Romero, an independent director, will replace Manuel Soto as chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee and has been named third vice chairman of the board. The board has also decided to name Isabel Tocino Biscarolasaga to the executive committee of the board.

In Madrid, Banco Santander shares are currently trading at 5.51 euros, up 1.83 percent, on a volume of 21.13 million shares.

The shares closed Friday's regular trading at $7.14 on the NYSE. In the pre-market activity, the shares are up 1.4 percent.
