Community Health Systems, Inc. (CYH) Monday reported first-quarter profit of $79.17 million or $0.86 per share, up from $75.47 million or $0.85 per share in the same period last year.

Income from continuing operations decreased to $96.3 million or $0.86 per share from $99.7 million or $0.85 per share last year.

Adjusted earnings for the quarter was $0.87 per share. On average, 23 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to earn $0.85 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

Operating revenues increased 0.4 percent to $3.31 billion from $3.297 billion last year. Analysts expected revenues of $3.40 billion.

Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2013, the company currently projects earnings in the range of $3.50 to $3.80 per share, with revenues ranging between $13.3 billion to $13.60 billion.

Analysts, based on consensus, currently expect the company to report full-year earnings of $3.70 per share on revenues of $13.64 billion.
