The California State legislature is considering a bill that would allow public school children to use bathrooms based on gender identity, CNS News is reporting.

The bill, Assembly Bill 1266, was introduced by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) and would allow students to use bathrooms designated for the opposite sex if their gender identity allowed.

The bill would also require that biological males be permitted to try out for and play on girls' sports teams if they feel their gender identity is female.

The legislation aims to deal with students who are born male or female but identify with the opposite gender of their birth.

The bill would "require that a pupil be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil's record."

The Pacific Justice Institute has set up a website in opposition to what it calls the "bathroom bill."
