Following up one of the most impressive box office runs of the awards season, "Silver Linings Playbook" hits DVD and Blu-ray this week as the most prominent new release, which should help it once again find its target adult demographic. Other options this week include thriller "Broken City," comedy "The Guilt Trip" and indie "Not Fade Away," while "Star Trek" fans can also check out new Blu-ray editions of the popular movie franchise that spans more than 30 years. William Wyler's "Funny Girl" is also getting a special edition Blu-ray release this week, celebrating the 1968 romantic drama that won Barbra Streisand her only Oscar for Best Actress.
When "Silver Linings Playbook" hit theaters back in mid-November, it was difficult to imagine that it would end up one of the most lucrative films of the year. Though stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro brought commercial clout, it started very slowly and didn't reach even 1,000 total theaters until more than two months after it was originally released. But even with its very slow start, "Silver Linings Playbook" would ride awards season hype to an eye-popping $232 million worldwide - a huge total for a $21 million production that didn't seem to have much international appeal before its release.
Tackling the realities of bipolar disorder, "Silver Linings Playbook" was mainly praised by critics and audiences alike, leading to a bevy of major Academy Awards. Though it would end up losing out on most of the big categories, Jennifer Lawrence snagged her first Oscar for Best Actress, beating out Jessica Chastain from "Zero Dark Thirty" and Naomi Watts from "The Impossible." Considering the success it had with audiences when it came through theaters and the popularity of Lawrence and company, "Silver Linings Playbook" should continue its success as it hits DVD and Blu-ray starting this week.
Also taking aim at adult audiences this week is R-rated thriller "Broken City," starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe. Hitting theaters in the dead of winter, "Broken City" had a hard time finding its target crowd despite a well-known cast, ultimately leading to a meager box office run of only $19 million domestically and only two trips to the top 10. "Broken City" follows the shady backroom deals of a corrupt mayor and a man who attempts to find redemption after being double-crossed, making it a good fit for action-seeking audiences this week.
Aiming at a much different crowd this week is "The Guilt Trip," a PG-13 comedy starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. Rogen plays a fledgling inventor who ends up on an unexpected road trip with his mother as he attempts to sell his latest invention. "The Guilt Trip" enjoyed a quiet run with audiences at the end of last year that should translate to some minor success in the home market starting this week.
Fans of Streisand can also pick up the special edition Blu-ray set of "Funny Girl," William Wyler's 1968 film that stars Streisand alongside Omar Sharif. "Funny Girl" follows the story of a young comic who rises from the slums to fame, giving Streisand her most famous role and helping her bring home an Oscar for Best Actress. "Funny Girl" was nothing short of a smash hit when it reached theaters back in the late 1960s, earning a 2013-equivalent of $317 million in the United States alone.
Also hitting stores this week will be David Chase's music drama "Not Fade Away." After creating landmark TV series "The Sopranos," Chase got behind the camera for a story about a young New Jersey rock band that dreams of making it big. "Not Fade Away" only hit 565 theaters at its widest point and didn't have much of an impact in theaters, but it should do a little better on the small screen over the next couple of weeks.
With J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek Into Darkness" set to hit theaters in mid-May, new Blu-ray editions of the older "Star Trek" films will also be reaching stores this week, starting with 1979 original "Star Trek: The Movie." Trekkies can also get their hands on a new special edition set of "The Next Generation," the popular 1990s "Star Trek" series starring Patrick Stewart.
Next week, Tom Cruise-starring action flick "Jack Reacher" is the most prominent new release followed by "Mama," the lucrative low-budget horror-thriller that was one of the most profitable releases of the winter. Also hitting stores will be the Criterion Collection Blu-ray of "Band of Outsiders" and a Blu-ray set of Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope."
