Southwest Airlines April Traffic, Capacity Rise; Load Factor Declines

Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) on Tuesday reported that traffic and capacity for the month of April increased from last year, while load factor declined.

For the month, Southwest estimates passenger revenue per available seat mile or PRASM to have decreased in the 4 to 5 percent range compared to the prior-year period.

Dallas, Texas-based Southwest said that traffic for the month, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, increased 1.5 percent to 8.74 billion from 8.61 billion in the previous-year period.

Capacity, measured in available seat miles or ASMs, rose 4.1 percent to 11.23 billion from 10.79 billion in the same period last year.

Load factor for the quarter was 77.8 percent, down 2.0 percentage points from 79.8 percent in the prior-year period.

Revenue passengers carried by the airline in the month totaled 9.27 million, down 0.2 percent from 9.30 million in the year-ago period. The number of passengers enplaned during the month were flat with the year-ago period at 11.25 million, while the number of trips flown declined 1.5 percent to 113,892.

For the first four months of 2013, Southwest's traffic increased 0.6 percent from the year-ago period to 32.49 billion RPMs, while capacity increased 1.5 percent to 42.03 billion ASMs. Load factor for the period was 77.3 percent, down 0.7 percentage points from 78.0 percent in the prior-year period.

In Tuesday's regular session, LUV is trading at $14.25, down $0.01 or 0.04 percent on a volume of 75,328 shares.
