Portuguese Exports Fall 2.8% In March

Portugal's merchandise exports decreased at a slightly faster pace in March, data released by Statistics Portugal showed Friday.

Export of goods decreased by 2.8 percent to EUR4.03 billion in March from a year earlier, after falling 2.6 percent in February. Compared to February, however, shipments recorded a 9 percent increase, reversing February's 4.4 percent expansion.

The value of imports plunged 9.8 percent annually to EUR4.61 billion during the month, faster than the 6.1 percent decrease seen in February.

Month-on-month, external purchases increased by 4.9 percent, recovering from the previous month's 1.7 percent fall.

During the three months ended March, overall shipments moved up 0.3 percent from the corresponding period a year earlier. Meanwhile, arrivals contracted by 7.2 percent, data showed.
