20 Killed, Over 3 Million Hit In China Rains

At least 20 people were killed and one reported missing in fresh rounds of heavy rain that lashed south China affecting 3.47 million people, state media reported on Monday.

Continuous rain and consequent floods have hit the people of 204 counties and cities in 12 provincial-level regions, with 187,000 people in urgent need of resettlement and living aid, the Xinhua news agency reported quoting a statement from the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction.

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou were the hardest-hit regions, with some areas getting 200 mm rain. Some 5,000 houses were destroyed and 46,000 damaged and crops in 26,900 hectares lost. The loss is estimated at 1.8 billion yuan ($290 million), the report said.
