RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has called on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to step down after reports that he permitted Justice Department employees to monitor the phone calls of Associated Press reporters.

Priebus had tough words for Holder in a new press release:

"Attorney General Eric Holder, in permitting the Justice Department to issue secret subpoenas to spy on Associated Press reporters, has trampled on the First Amendment and failed in his sworn duty to uphold the Constitution."

"Because Attorney General Holder has so egregiously violated the public trust, the president should ask for his immediate resignation. If President Obama does not, the message will be unmistakable: The President of the United States believes his administration is above the Constitution and does not respect the role of a free press."

According to White House press secretary Jay Carney, the White House has "no knowledge" of the Justice department's actions:

"We are not involved in decisions made in connection with criminal investigations, as those matters are handled independently by the Justice Department," Carney said, reports CNN.
