John Lennon was homesick for his native England in the years leading up to his death in New York City, claims Joe Flannery, author of the new book, Standing In The Wings: The Beatles, Brian Epstein And Me.
The author told the Daily Express: "He was very well and happy but he missed Liverpool, he missed the others and he missed London."
There were other reasons to leave the U.S., says Flannery. Lennon was apparently concerned about "that bastard Nixon" getting to him.
Despite the former president having been no longer in power, Flannery says that Lennon was still convinced that Nixon was coming for him and it would be a good idea to get back to England before it was too late.
President Nixon did attempt to have Lennon deported in 1973 due to his anti-war stance, but Lennon was allowed to stay after Nixon resigned.
Lennon was ultimately murdered by Mark David Chapman in December of 1980 before he had a chance to return to England.
Standing In The Wings: The Beatles, Brian Epstein And Me is due out September 1 on The History Press.
