Several Manhattan-area McDonald's location have begun charging customers for extra ketchup packets. DNAinfo, in an investigative report, discovered that in 35 chains south of Central Park, at least 15 customers were charged when asking for more than their allotted share of condiments.

A manager at East 14th Street and First Avenue, says she's had the fee in place since 2011 in order to "control condiment cost."

She added that she implemented the fee after discovering full packets in the garbage: "Why should I be wasting money on that?" she asked.

A spokesman for McDonald's told the Daily Meal that all 300 NYC locations are privately run, which gives them the privilege to charge what they please for condiments. Each owner also has the option to hand out packets or use ketchup dispensers.
