'Dexter,' 'Cloud Atlas' Available This Week On DVD And Blu-ray

With the final season of Showtime's hit series "Dexter" approaching, the complete seventh season will likely make same waves as it hits DVD and Blu-ray this week, while sci-fi epic "Cloud Atlas" could also find a fairly wide audience starting this week. Also getting launched in a fairly slow week for new releases will be "Texas Chainsaw 3D," TV movie "Liz & Dick" and the Criterion Blu-ray of the original "3:10 to Yuma."

Though Showtime has never seen the type of popularity as HBO's programming, "Dexter" has been a minor revolution for the premium cable provider. The show about a serial killer (Michael C. Hall) who preys on other serial killers has turned into somewhat of a phenomenon over its first seven seasons, leading to what should be a very popular series finale this summer. The final season is slated to air at the end of June, giving fans plenty of time to catch-up with the seventh season starting this week.

Also hitting stores this week is the Wachowski siblings' sci-fi epic "Cloud Atlas," starring an all-star cast that includes Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. After directing "The Matrix" trilogy, Lana and Andy Wachowski turned to a popular novel by David Mitchell, whose story engulfs the spirit of human evolution over the span of several decades, with both Hanks and Berry playing multiple roles.

But even though there was some positive critical buzz for the ambitious and deeply philosophical film, "Cloud Atlas" was ultimately a flop at the box office, earning just $27 million domestically despite a well known cast and a production budget of more than $100 million. "Cloud Atlas" would land in the top 10 just three times back in the fall and never quite caught on with mainstream audiences, though a lack of competition this week in the home market should be a major advantage.

Another title hitting stores this week is "Texas Chainsaw 3D," the latest film from popular franchise "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." As the seventh "Texas Chainsaw" release, "Texas Chainsaw 3D" had no problem finding its audience back in early January, racking up a solid $21 million in opening revenue. But even though "Chainsaw 3D" got off to a great early start and posted one of the biggest openings of the winter, it also completely tanked with audiences after its opening, suggesting that there isn't too much of a mainstream audience left as it hits Blu-ray this week.

Also likely to struggle finding an audience is "Liz & Dick," a TV movie starring Lindsay Lohan as famed movie star Elizabeth Taylor. "Liz & Dick" tells the story of Taylor and her eventual husband Richard Burton on the set of "Cleopatra," one of the biggest productions of the 1960s. Though ratings weren't huge when it launched on Lifetime last fall, "Liz & Dick" should be a good choice for those interested in the famously topsy-turvy relationship between Burton and Taylor, who married each other on two separate occasions.

Those less than impressed by "Liz & Dick" could turn to some older titles hitting stores on Blu-ray this week, including the Criterion Collection of the Glenn Ford-starring "3:10 to Yuma." Though contemporary audiences might be familiar with the Russell Crowe/Christian Bale remake, the original was a very popular western that first hit theaters back in 1957. Based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, "3:10 to Yuma" tells the tale of a stagecoach holdup gone awry in 1880s Arizona, with Ford breaking from his usual mold to give us the memorable villain Ben Wade.

Next week, the release schedule will pick back up with Arnold Schwarzenegger's latest action smash-up, "The Last Stand," the most recent season of HBO's immensely popular fantasy series "True Blood" and the release of Steven Soderbergh's corporate thriller "Side Effects." The Jason Statham/Jennifer Lopez-starring action flick "Parker" will also hit stores, though a weak box office run suggests it won't have much of an impact in the home market.
