Public Memorial For Slayer Guitarist Scheduled On May 23 In LA

A memorial has been announced for Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died last week in a California hospital at the age of 49 due to alcohol-related cirrhosis.

The memorial will be held at Los Angeles' Hollywood Palladium on May 23. It runs from 3:30-7.30pm, reports Billboard, and up to 4,000 people will be able to attend on a first come, first serve basis.

Hanneman was a founding member of Slayer and had an key role in helping "shape Slayer's uncompromising thrash-metal sound as well as an entire genre of music," the statement on the band's site reads.

"His riffs of fury and punk-rock attitude were heard in the songs he wrote, including Slayer classics 'Angel of Death,' 'Raining Blood,' 'South of Heaven' and 'War Ensemble,'" the statement continued.
