North Korea fired three short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan on Saturday, reports said citing South Korea's defense ministry.

The missile launches were apparently routine, but came at a time when tensions are high on the Korean Peninsula, following a third nuclear test by the North in February. North Korea had carried out similar missile tests in March.

Two missiles were fired into the East Sea in the morning and the third was carried out in the afternoon.

North Korea has been issuing threats of war and missile strikes on the South and the U.S., in response to the fresh sanctions slapped on the country by the United Nations Security Council in March. The sanctions are meant to punish the reclusive nation for its recent nuclear test this year, which violated previous UN sanctions for nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.
