The derailment and collision of a train in Bridgeport, Connecticut that caused an indefinite suspension of service along the busiest Amtrak commute in the U.S. is expected to cause massive delays for morning commuters in the coming days.
The USA Today reports that approximately 30,000 passengers a day use the Metro-North Railroad stations that have been closed on the weekend, and roughly 125,000 overall use the rail line just to get to New Haven, Connecticut.
The continued closure of the stations is expected to cause an excess of vehicles across Interstate 95 and other heavily travelled roads.
One person has characterized it as carmaggedon," said Connecticut Senator Sen. Richard Blumenthal. "It will be at best chaotic, probably a great deal of turmoil on all the major traffic arteries going into New York," adding that the railway's shutdown in Bridgeport "is now a stranglehold on the normal commutes for literally tens of thousands of people who will have to find a way around that by bus or by car."
The accident, which occurred on Friday and injured 72 people, is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
