"Doctor Who" will be back for its eighth season, wrote the BBC on its blog over the weekend, adding that lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, is "already plotting a brand new run of adventures for the Doctor."

Matt Smith, who's played the doc since 2010, told TV Magazine that he'll definitely be back for the eighth season:

"We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014."

In addition, the 50th anniversary of the program is set for a November 23 airing in 3D. The 50th anny special includes appearances from "Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman with David Tennant and John Hurt, seen briefly at the end of The Name of the Doctor. Billie Piper returns alongside Jemma Redgrave, Joanna Page and the Zygons!"
