A firefighter from the Phoenix Fire Department died on Sunday after being pinned between two emergency vehicles that were responding to a incident.

Local television station KTVK reports that emergency crews were responding to a mulch fire in Phoenix, Saturday afternoon when Bradley Harper, 23, got stuck between an ambulance and a fire truck while the two vehicles were trying to pass each other on a narrow road.

Once Harper was freed, he was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"Tonight, one of the worst imaginable things that you could have happen to one of your firefighters, happened," said Phoenix Fire Department Chief Bob Khan. "It hits you in the gut. It's like a family member that's gone down. The love you have for the people you work with is not really describable by words; it's just a bond."

Harper is survived by his wife and parents.
