Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day was one of many rockers to pay tribute to Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for the Doors, who died on Monday at the age of 74 in Rosenheim, Germany where he was being treated for bile duct cancer.

BJ hit Instagram to post a 1960s-era black-and-white photograph of the legendary organist, adding, "#thankyouraymanzarek #thedoors #breakonthrough."

Slash added his own tribute via Twitter, remarking that the band typified "L.A. sound":

"The Doors represent the LA sound to me. It was the 1st band I remember hearing when I came from England; 'Light my fire,' I'll never forget."

Krist Novoselic, former bass player for Nirvana, also hit the micro-blogging network to add his condolences and note his appreciation for Ray's accomplishments: "Thanks for the great music Ray Manzarek!"
