Following multiple thunderstorms across the state of Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service delivered a tornado warning for the southwest corner of the state.

Boston.com reports that the warning was issued after a trained weather spotter in New York witnessed a tornado in Copake, New York that was heading east towards Massachusetts.

"There is nothing here, just heavy rain. We issued a reverse 911 warning just as a precaution, but there is nothing. Got to go. Bye," said a police officer in Great Barrington.

Local television station WFXT reports that the alert was dispatched shortly before 5 p.m. for southern Berkshire County in western Massachusetts, as well as various nearby areas in Connecticut and New York.

Residents were encouraged to seek shelter. The tornado warning passed at 6 p.m., although a thunderstorm warning remains in effect for those areas until 9 p.m.
