South Africa's Consumer Price Inflation Remains Stable

South Africa's inflation remained unchanged in April, but was higher than forecast by economists, the latest figures from Statistics South Africa showed Wednesday.

The rate of inflation measured by the consumer price index stayed at 5.9 percent for a third consecutive month. This was the highest inflation rate recorded since April last year.

Economists expected the rate to fall to 5.7 percent. On a monthly basis, CPI increased 0.4 percent.

Compared to April 2012, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 6.2 percent. Costs of alcoholic beverages and tobacco were up 6.5 percent. The transport index increased 6.2 percent.
