A prized Belgian racing pigeon has sold at auction for a record setting $400,000. The bird, named Bolt, was part of a collection of birds sold by renowned racing pigeon breeder Leo Heremans, according to the BBC.
Most of the buyers hailed from China and Taiwan, the BBC reports, and pigeon auctioneer Nikolaas Gyselbrecht explained why Heremans' birds are in such high demand:
A painting made by Picasso is worth more than one made by an unknown artist. It's the same with this pigeon," Gyselbrecht told the BBC.
Bolt, named after Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt, was just one of over 500 birds sold at the auction. In total Heremans raised over 4.3 million Euros with the auction, which included his entire collection of birds. Bolt's sale price shatters a previous record set at £16,000 in 2011.
