Newly announced New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner is in second place in the race for the Democratic nomination, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, although the poll also showed that nearly half of voters said the former Congressman should not run.

The poll showed that 15 percent of New York City voters would vote for Weiner if the Democratic primary were being held today, unchanged from his level of support a month ago.

Weiner trails City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, but her level of support has slid to 25 percent in the latest poll from a high of 37 percent in February.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller William Thompson are tied for third at 10 percent, while 6 percent said they would vote for Comptroller John Liu.

Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said, "With former Congressman Anthony Weiner seeking the Democratic nod, it still looks like Council Speaker Christine Quinn against the guys."

"But where she once was brushing up against the magic 40 percent number that could get her past a run-off, the wear and tear of the campaign, and possibly the addition of Weiner, are taking a toll on the front-runner," he added.

As mentioned above, however, forty-nine percent of New York City voters said Weiner should not run for mayor compared to 38 percent that said he should run. Fifty-two percent of women said Weiner should not run.

Weiner resigned from Congress in June of 2011 amid news that he sent sexually suggestive photos and messages to several young women. After initially claiming his Twitter account was hacked, he later admitted to the indiscretions. Weiner is married to Huma Abedin, a former aide Hillary Clinton.

"Look, I've made some big mistakes and I know I've let a lot of people down. But I've also learned some tough lessons," Weiner said in a video announcing his campaign for mayor.

"I'm running for mayor because I've been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life," he added. "And I hope I get a second chance to work for you."

The Quinnipiac University survey of 1,082 New York City voters was conducted May 14th through 20th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
