Increased levels of vitamin B could help decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease says a new study from researchers at Oxford University. For the study the researchers examined 156 people ages 70 and older who all experienced mild dementia and high levels of proteins commonly linked with Alzheimer's risk.

Some of those in the group received a vitamin cocktail including vitamins B6 and B12 along with folic acid. Those who took the cocktail saw a decrease in brain matter of only 0.6 percent compared with those in the placebo group who saw grey matter decline of 5.2 percent.

"It's the first and only disease-modifying treatment that's worked," said A. David Smith, lead researcher on the study. "We have proved the concept that you can modify the disease."
