Yuichiro Miura, an 80-year-old Japanese man, has become the oldest to climb Mount Everest, beating the previous record held by Min Bahadur Sherchan of Nepal, who climbed the mountain at the age of 76 in 2008, reports the BBC.
"I never imagined I could make it to the top of Mt Everest at age 80. This is the world's best feeling, although I'm totally exhausted. Even at 80, I can still do quite well," said Miura from the summit via satellite phone.
Miura first scaled the mountain in 2003 at the age of 70, repeating the feat five years later. In 1970, writes the Hindustan Times, he became the first person to ski down the mountain from an elevation of 8,000 meters.
The climb was closely followed in Miura's home country, according to al Jazeera, with daily broadcasts of his phone calls and the publication of several photos from the ascent.
