Reports of a foul stench coming from a Florida home led police to find almost 40 abandoned animals inside, tampabay.com reports.

A neighbor notified police of the home where a strong smell was coming from and numerous flies could be seen from the windows. When officials arrived to the home, they discovered a wide variety of animals abandoned inside with no owner to be found.

The animals are believed to have been left unattended for about a week.

Dogs, cats, rabbits, a snake and a lizard were all found in the residence with animal feces scattered everywhere. Many of them were found looking emaciated.

A few hours after officials arrived, the woman renting the home showed up and was questioned. Alicia Nelson was charged with animal abuse and animal neglect; an investigation continues.

All of the animals were removed from the house by Animal Control.
