Metallica fronter James Hetfield, in an interview with Billboard, says the band has enough raw material for an new album:

"We got out into the room and jammed and we've come up with enough material for a record, for sure. We've gone through maybe one-tenth of the material that's on our riffs CDs."

He added that the group hasn't been able to find the time to put it all together:

"We've got enough for an album, we just haven't had enough time to really focus on it and dial in and start whittling it into these masterpieces, hopefully. I want it done yesterday."

It's tough to blame the band for dragging their feet on the new LP as they've been busy with their Orion Music and More festival (June) and the release of their 3D movie, Metallica through the Never, due this fall. The band's last studio effort, Death Magnetic, hit back in 2008.
