Italian Consumer Morale Weakens Unexpectedly

Confidence among Italian consumers declined unexpectedly in May, the latest report from statistical office Istat showed Friday.

The consumer confidence index fell to 85.9 in May from 86.3 in April. Economists expected an increase in the index score to 86.9.

The economic climate index dropped to 70.5 from 73.3 in April. Consumers' assessment of their personal financial climate, meanwhile, rose to 92 from 90.5 in the previous month.

The indicator for current economic conditions remained steady at 90.1 while that for households' future economic expectations fell marginally to 80.6 from 80.8 in the previous month.
