29 bars and restaurants across New Jersey were raided by authorities earlier this week in Operation Swill, an investigation that exposed businesses for selling cheap or compromised alcohol at top-shelf prices, reports NJ.com.
Authorities say that some of the restaurants—13 of the 29 targeted were TGI Friday—were putting rubbing alcohol and dirty water in the bottles of their most expensive booze.
"This alleged scheme is a dishonest ruse to increase profits, and it is a slap in the face of the consumer. The consumer should have the peace of mind to know that when they pay for something, they get exactly what they paid for, no exceptions," said the state's Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa, according to the New York Daily News.
Investigators seized a total of 1,000 bottles of various liquors and are now testing their contents.
TGI Fridays told NBC New York that it is looking into the allegations.
