The state of Massachusetts is putting financial roadblocks in the way for entrepreneurs thinking about starting marijuana dispensaries.
The Boston Globe reports that the Department of Public Health has proposed that a license to sell the narcotic for medical use will have to pay an annual fee of $50,000. The fee, writes legislators, will ensure the industry is not dependent on taxpayers to survive:
"[The] "fee structure [encourages] a self-financed medical marijuana industry that supports patient access without relying on taxpayer resources."
In addition, consumers will be charged a $50 fee under the plan. According to MassLive, the Department of Public Health will not set prices for marijuana—that'll be up to the dispensaries.
A public hearing on the draft proposal is slated for June 14 at the Department of Public Health in Boston.
